Factor

A factor is a measurable characteristic of securities — such as value or momentum — associated with differences in returns.

Factors summarise why groups of securities tend to behave similarly. Some factors are associated with long-run return premiums, others mainly explain risk. A factor is only useful to an investment process if the relationship is robust across time and markets.
